As a St. Paul roofing contractor we know all too well that every year here in the Twin Cities we get at least a few strong hailstorms.  Hailstorms are storms that produce hail, which are balls of ice in varying sizes.  The largest piece of hail on record is nearly 6” in diameter!  A piece of hail that large could literally be deadly, but even the more common, much smaller hail can do fatal damage to your homes roof and siding.

Home hail damage is often not easily detected, especially on the roofs of two or three story homes.  Hail damage will compromise the lifespan of your roof, and may also leave your home vulnerable to water damage and other problems.  It is important to identify and repair a hail damaged roof as soon as possible.  Waiting too long to repair a damaged roof can lead to further damage and more expensive repairs.  You may also be denied by your insurance company if you wait too long to file a claim for the repair work.  If you suspect you may have roof damage from a recent hail storm the following steps will help you determine the extent of the damage, if any and take the necessary steps to getting your home repaired with the help of a St. Paul roofing contractor.

As a St. Paul roofing contractor we recommend these steps:

Step 1: Look for visible damage on the exterior of your home.  Walk around your home and check the siding for dents or freshly damaged paint.  If you can safely get a look at your roof, inspect the shingles for blisters or dents, or missing shingles.  Don’t forget to inspect your gutters and downspouts for dings and dents.

Step 2: Look for visible damage inside your home.  Are there new water stains on your ceiling or running down your walls?  If so, you should have this damage addressed immediately before it gets any worse!  If roof leaks are left un-repaired you may end up having to completely replace your roof, in addition to making costly repairs to interior of your home.

Step 3: Contact your insurance agent and let them know you suspect storm damage.  They will likely send an insurance adjuster to your home to inspect the damage, prepare a cost estimate and help compile the necessary paperwork.

Call your local St. Paul roofing contractor to get your own, independent estimate.

Step 4: Most insurance adjusters are impartial and fair, but it’s always a good idea to get a second opinion from someone who is working for you.  Most St. Paul roofing contractors offer a free estimate, and because they are independent of the insurance company, they may be less biased in their appraisal.  The St. Paul roofing contractor that you contact should also be willing to communicate with the insurance adjuster to arrive at a fair and appropriate solution.

Step 5: Make sure you get everything in writing!  Your insurance company should provide you with written information regarding your claim and what will be covered.  Your St. Paul roofing contractor should also provide you with a written contract outlining in detail the work to be done and what it will cost.

A St. Paul roofing contractor understands hail damage!

Hailstorms can do an incredible amount of damage to your roof in a short amount of time.  Once the storm passes, don’t waste any time in assessing any damage the storm may have done.  If you suspect damage, contact your insurance company, and your St. Paul roofing contractor to get their assessment.  The longer you delay the more it could cost you!
